Is ATVing Safe for Kids?
Kids and ATVs make a great pair, however kids aren't always the best at choosing what is safe and what isn't. That's why riding an ATV should be safe and fun, but if you're kids are riding they should always be supervised by an adult too.
An ATV helmet is first and foremost. The National Children's Center on Rural and Agricultural Safety did an interesting study in 2006 and found that the majority of injuries suffered by youth ATV riders was due to not wearing a helmet when they were riding and an impact was suffered.
Along with wearing a helmet, make sure that your kids are wearing protective body wear when they ride. Riding jerseys and long pants make for a great look as well as safety. The pants and jerseys are fitted and not likely to get caught in any moving parts when the ATV is being driven, and along with that high boots will further protect your children's shins and feet as they ride. Gloves are a must for good grip and many of the newer ATV glove models for kids have been redesigned to have pre-curved fingers for better grip.
Lessons are another big plus. If you ask around at your local ATV dealer or try your local bureau of motor vehicles and you should be able to find ATV safety classes. Many of these classes will give your kids a certificate upon completion and certain federally managed lands (such as national forest lands) will require these certificates to be shown before your kids will be allowed to ride.
Riding the trails and unexplored paths is a great way to reconnect with your kids, make it a fun safe time and observe all the ATV safety basics and you'll pass on safe practices that will make every ATV ride a fun ride in the future.
