Choosing an ATV Helmet for Your Child

There have been a large number of articles and stories in the media regarding mishaps of children riding ATV vehicles. The sad fact is, the majority of these stories had two alarming facts in common; first, the children involved in the accidents were riding an ATV without any adult supervision and second, they weren't wearing proper safety gear which at the minimum should include gloves, goggles and an ATV helmet.

There are a good number of ATV helmets that are made specifically for kids and fitting your child is just like fitting a helmet on yourself. The helmet should fit snugly but not too tight and let your child wear the helmet for a short period of time, ten to fifteen minutes to make sure that it's not too heavy. Don't use an adult sized small for a child - instead opt for a youth ATV helmet that is made for the special nuances of a child's head.

Another consideration for a youth helmet is whether or not to get a full face helmet. The absolute best protection for your child when riding an ATV as the child's head and face are protected from not only impact but debris that gets kicked up from the wheels. A piece of dirt, sand or wood chip lodged in an eye and the price of admission to your local emergency room for removal of that item makes a full faced helmet a very good investment for anyone that loves to take their kids trail riding or ATV riding on a local track. Dirt and debris is a very real part of riding an ATV and when you're choosing an ATV helmet for your children, make sure you take into consideration the type of terrain where you'll be riding as part of choosing a helmet.

The last major factor for choosing an ATV helmet for your child is the fit. You know it should be snug but not too tight. A good test is to have your child turn his heard from side to side and make sure the helmet doesn't slip, if it does - it's too loose and try a different make or model. The amount of foam instead can vary from helmet to helmet.

Use these tips and make sure your kids have not only the best time riding their ATV's but also the safest.
