ATV Helmet Basics
As crazy as it may sound, early on in the sport of riding ATV's, many riders opted not to wear an ATV helmet, the result was that numerous people were injured and some even killed through traumatic brain injuries suffered in ATV/rider or ATV/object impacts.
An ATV helmet is essential to anyone riding, no matter how much experience you have under your belt and in many states, it is the law that anyone that rides an ATV on publicly owned or serviced lands much wear minimum safety gear, this usually means a DOT or Snell approved ATV helmet and goggles. And you really only need to meet two big requirements to have the safety you need in your ATV helmet.
The basics of an ATV helmet are very simple. First of all, make sure it's a new helmet. You truly have no way of knowing the history of a helmet and helmets are good for protection for one impact only. An impact such as falling off the top of a closet shelf onto a hard floor can create microscopic cracks in the helmet and it won't offer the protection to your head in a real impact. Unless you know where that helmet has been every second of it's previous ownership - opt for a new ATV helmet.
The second big basic is to get a helmet that fits. A helmet should fit snugly but not snug to the point that you have a migraine just looking at your ATV helmet; you should be able to turn your head from side to side without your helmet slipping.
